The Forgotten Wisdom of Sacred Union: Healing Through Tantra, Mary Magdalene, and Divine Love

I’m hot off a recent conversation with collaborator, Remo Eerma and dear sister, Vyushti Jouhari for the New Paradigm Navigators Podcast, a subset of The Scientific & Medical Network about sacred union, what tantra is beyond our Western conceptions, sacred sexuality, and, inevitably, Mary Magdalene.

In the West, Tantra is often misunderstood as being about sex.

Let me bust that myth right now. It’s not.

Tantra is a vast system, a path of liberation with many streams, and is considered one of the fastest paths to enlightenment due to its intense nature of encourage us, in my understanding and integration, to embrace the divine in all.

This includes, and especially encourages us, to go into the stickiest, darkest parts of ourselves to find where we are blocked from truth and thus freedom and to work with systems of practices to liberate us - body, mind, and soul.

Not mentally.

Literally.

Because in those parts - in our deepest shame, guilt, fear, regret, judgment, illusion - is God, Source, the Divine, the Universe.

Within you.

Within all of us.

Within everything.

To feel that, and then thus know that… That’s no walk in the park and yet that’s exactly what our world needs - enlightenment and stat!

This is a deeply feminine way of being, healing, and going about enlightenment that has brought me to my knees time and time again in order to awaken to a deeper spiritual truth.

We cannot think, control, or dominate this process. We must surrender and follow its lead.

The misconception happens because Tantric philosophy can be applied to sexuality (as it can be applies to anything), especially in the West, because sexuality has been so repressed, demonized, and weaponized.

The West has a lot of sexual, ahem, baggage, to say the least.

These is where Neo-Tantra comes in.

To not only reclaim our sexuality from historical and cultural demonization and violence, but also to experience our sexuality as sacred - an act and expression of erotic spirituality that can also be awakening is radically different that our Western religious narratives.

On the surface, our Western world may talk sex-positively but when women do not have reproductive control of their bodies, we witness sexualization instead of sexual empowerment, we lack a comprehensive sexual education for all (let alone a sacred-sexual education), and sexual violence is widespread… we’ve got a lot of healing, awakening, and liberating to do.

When we bring Tantra in our relationships, especially partnerships and marriages, we instantly have some of the stickiest material for liberation and enlightenment to work with!

Partnership to me, and in the eyes of sacred union, has the potential to be the most intimate connection we can share with another human and thus is one of the most intimate connection we can share with the Divine.

Though, we are never taught to aspire to sacred union.

Sacred union is the conscious acknowledgment and choice to devote our partnership to living enlightened and cherishing the scaredness of our relationship, as my partner and I relate to it.

The Divine is everywhere, and as I share in this episode, our world never lost its divinity, sacredness, and magic.

We forgot it.

We were driven from in historically, by threat of death and marginalization, if I didn’t look “the only way” it could.

We awaken to the magic and divinity that’s always been here, in everything in our lives - never abandoned, never lost.

The greatest irony is that the myth that was once contorted by a patriarchal system that devalued women and wanted to use a religion to unite and control an empire has sacred union deep in its roots.

As I quoted in the episode from Lord of the Rings, “History becomes legend. Legend becomes myth.”

Sacred union, doesn’t just exist in Western myths and religious narratives, but can be found as a deeply spiritual teaching across almost all traditions.

However, what I have discovered in researching, studying, receiving initiation in, and presenting on the mysteries of Mary Magdalene is that Magdalene and Yeshua (Jesus) modeled, as a spiritual teaching, the path of sacred union.

This is hardly my idea. However I have academically looked at the source texts - gospels deemed heresy by that system - and this is indeed what they describe.

On this I can only recommend Harvard-scholar, Meggan Watterson’s Mary Magdalene Revealed: The First Apostle, Her Feminist Gospel & the Christianity We Haven't Tried Yet.

Furthermore, the myth (not the history) is a replication of the Egyptian resurrection myth of Osiris and Isis.

What would it be like if the story of the foundation of Western Society was in fact one of sacred union, personal liberation, enlightenment through one’s own humanity and divinity - known, embraced, and embodied?

It would be healing. It would be liberating. It would be reclamation. It would be integration. It would be wholeness.

That would be liberation for humanity.

If sacred union, sacred sexuality, Mary Magdalene, or Tantra spark something deep within you…
